Light Tower Specs Decoded: Fuel, Output, and Noise for Diesel Trailers

Night work separates serious crews from the rest. When the sun drops, a trailer-mounted diesel light tower keeps production moving. But spec sheets are full of numbers that don't always translate to the job site. Here's what those figures actually mean when you're running a crew through the night.

Fuel Consumption and Runtime—What to Expect

The old metal halide towers were thirsty. You'd feed them diesel and watch the gauge drop. LED changed the math completely.

What you'll actually see:

  • Older metal halide units (4 x 1000W): burn roughly 0.4 gallons every hour. A full tank gets you about 90 hours before you're reaching for the fuel can.
  • Modern LED towers (4 x 300W): sip about 0.2 gallons per hour. Same size tank? You're looking at 200+ hours of continuous run.

That's the headline number. But here's where guys get caught: plug in a couple of corded tools or a small heater off the generator's auxiliary outlets, and that consumption rate climbs. Lumen Output—How Much Light Is Enough?

Lumen output gets all the attention. But a high number doesn't always mean a well-lit site.

  • Four 350W SMD heads: about 184,000 lumens. Stepping up for larger events or emergency response settings.
